Captain Phillips **
The 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk
Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.
Blazingly constructed in its director’s
typical manner, this film forcefully dissects the grand illusion of economic diversity
in the face of life and death jeopardy. It would have been even more successful
had it not been bogged down by the conventions of love and family.

As I Lay Dying
When a matriarch dies, her family begins a quest to honour her wish to
be buried in the nearby town of Jefferson.
A conceited exercise disguised as a shy
artistic commission. Franco’s attempt is admirable but he is clearly out of his
element.

Escape From Tomorrow **
While on holiday
at Disney World, a father of two begins to lose his insanity among the barrage
of flight and fancy.
Lynchian dismemberment on why one man’s vision of
family entertainment became a stringent corporate conglomerate. Filmed guerrilla-style
at both Disney World, Florida and Disneyland, California, it stumbles over its
own absurdity toward the end but offers a bleak, abnormal outlook on childhood
dreams and their consequences.
