The 2017 Cinema Touch Awards - ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

by
Julien Faddoul

5. Phantom Thread – Paul Thomas Anderson
For an unsettling, accentuated, circuitously recounted depiction of both the benevolence and the non-conformity of intimate relationships.

4. BPM – Robin Campillo, Philippe Mangeot
For a beautiful example of substantiality and structure.

3. The Big Sick – Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani
For a typically flabby 21st century romantic comedy that miraculously pulls it all off with an acute attention to social/societal details. It remains utterly convincing right up until the very end.

2. Lady Bird – Greta Gerwig
For a series of smart, witty, beautifully assembled episodes. It plays like a conciliation of youthful flightiness and the journey to understanding the problems of others.

1. A Quiet Passion – Terence Davies
For not only is his thoroughness unsurpassed, but so is, as this effort shows, his wit.

Runner Up: Person to Person – Dustin Guy Defa

5. Molly's GameAaron Sorkin
For not getting in his own way, allowing his usual percussive dialogue to revel in the spicy commentary.

4. Wonderstruck Brian Selznick
For one idiosyncratic experience, a children's film for those who can handle it.

3. Blade Runner 2049 Hampton Fancher, Michael Green
For completely improving on the first film conceptually, delving far deeper in philosophy than one would expect, with questions of existence, religion and the myth of true human intuition.

2. The Lost City of Z James Gray
For his usual discipline, despite a more disjointed narrative.

1. Call Me by Your Name James Ivory
For substituting angst with tranquil yet spirited languorousness.

Runner Up: Mudbound – Virgil Williams, Dee Rees
