Shazam *

A boy is given the ability to become an adult superhero in times of need with a single magic word.
Lively superhero film based on DC comics that takes forever to get going and doesn’t end anywhere edifying. It might have been twice as effective at half the length (133 minutes).

d – David F. Sandberg
w – Henry Gayden, Darren Lemke   (Based on the Characters Created by Bill Parker, CC Beck)
ph – Maxime Alexandre
pd – Jennifer Spence
m – Benjamin Wallfisch

p – Peter Safran

Dumbo

Disney remakes one of the films that defined their brand for no altruistic reason.
Another lame and odious live-action remake from Disney by the filmmaker who helped initiate this string of artistic infringement back in 2010. The peculiar aspect to this instalment – ineptly staged; with bad music and dialogue; an embarrassed cast being upstaged by computer graphics – is that in remaking Dumbo (1940) Disney has gone back farther enough in time to select a film that is a bonafide classic of cinema, yet it doesn’t strike anyone the least bit out of the ordinary because it falls under the same exhibition economics that gave us dreck like Maleficent (2014), Cinderella (2015) and Beauty and the Beast (2017). Do you really think the same jaded compliance would counterpoise a remake of, say, Lawrence of Arabia (1962) with a CGI desert?

ph – Ben Davis
pd – Rick Henrichs
m – Danny Elfman

The Beach Bum *

A rebellious stoner named Moondog lives life by his own rules.
As usual with Korine, it's unclear what sociological point he’s trying to make by presenting a virtually stream-of-conscience depiction of rich people enjoying sex, drugs and sunbathing other than to point and laugh at the sight of such hooliganry. It’s only occasionally funny, which is not nearly enough.

wd – Harmony Korine
ph – Benoît Debie

The Best of Enemies *

The story of the real-life relationship between an outspoken civil rights activist and a local Ku Klux Klan leader in 1971 North Carolina.
Uncomplicated, not entirely factually accurate retelling of the rivalry between Ann Atwater and CP Ellis. Strictly for those who are looking to be educated about such things.

Pet Sematary

Remake of the 1989 film.
Rubbish, unnecessary remake; the kind that relies on plot machinations so absurd that its audience is required to suspend not only disbelief but also intelligence.

w – Matt Greenberg, Jeff Buhler   (Based on the Novel by Stephen King)
ph – Laurie Rose

The Highwaymen *

A pair of Texas Rangers come out of retirement to catch the infamous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde.
Guiltless but woefully uninspired old-fashioned chase movie that tries to tell an interesting story but ultimately plots toward inertia and ennui.

d – John Lee Hancock
w – John Fusco
ph – John Schwartzman
pd – Michael Corenblith
m – Thomas Newman
ed – Robert Frazen
cos – Daniel Orlandi

p – Casey Silver

Hellboy

Hellboy comes to England, where he must defeat Nimue, Merlin’s consort and the Blood Queen.
Dreadful, joyless and witless; production problems clearly evident on-screen; from a director whose always suffered from imagination poverty.
