5. Lincoln – Daniel
Day-Lewis
For carrying the world on his shoulders and yet never
forcing it into an example of the imperialist performer. It is a rousing,
vigorous and deeply gratifying performance.
4. The Color Wheel – Alex Ross Perry
For some of the year's greatest character work. His Colin
was the character whom I most felt for this year and Mr Perry always knows
exactly who he is. Also, for being one-half of the year's greatest duo.
3. Amour – Jean-Louis Trintignant
For fearlessly showing us his
heart breaking so ours didn't have to break by themselves.
2. The Master – Joaquin Phoenix
For a harrowing, animalistic
creation. The savagery of his gestures, the pain in his walk, the vulnerability
in his eyes, Mr Phoenix's work is truly astonishing.
1. Holy Motors – Denis Lavant
For a guileless performance
several times over. He electrifies his film, his co-stars and his audience in
ways that has never been seen before. It is hands-down the best performance of
the year.
