5. Rush – Daniel Bruhl
For giving by
far the best of the year's mimicry performances. But only an actor with such
charisma could be more mesmeric that the real-life figure. Also, he saves what
would have been an unbearable movie otherwise.
4. No – Gael Garcia Bernal
For his
aching, concentrated eyes and oscillated, impulsive smile. He takes a role that
could easily have been nondescript and makes it sententious.
3.
12 Years a Slave – Chiwetel Ejiofor
For
such ferocity. Even if McQueen were not interested in showing us such horror,
Ejiofor's eyes would convey it all.
2.
Inside Llewyn Davis – Oscar Isaac
For
maybe the most soulful plunge into wallowing woe we've ever seen. If you feel
like you know him and he never gets old, he's more than a folk song. Hang
me oh hang me.
1.
The Wolf of Wall Street – Leonardo
DiCaprio
For
an out-of-body experience. It is astounding to watch him completely inhabit the
grossness and the charisma. There are people who worship DiCaprio and people
who despise him. I am mixed. But this was undeniably a great accomplishment.
Runner
Up: Captain Phillips – Tom
Hanks
