5. Obvious Child – Jenny
Slate
For
taking an unlikely personality and turning it into effervescent comedy and
warmth.
4. The Immigrant – Marion
Cotillard
For
providing this year with two devastating performances. Ewa Cybulski is my
favourite of the two only because she exhibits true Lillian Gish torture.
3. Under the Skin – Scarlett Johansson
For a fierce dive into ethnographic fearlessness, finding new
ways to convey loneliness. It is the year's boldest performance.
2. Still
Alice – Julianne Moore
For, as always,
infusing more humanity than one might think possible so that we don't merely
watch her but stare at her.
1. Listen Up Philip – Elisabeth Moss
For carefully constructing a line of empathy that allows us in
to Ashley's mental state of lament. Even as she erratically chides her
ex-boyfriend, we always understand why.
Runner
Up: Two Days, One Night – Marion Cotillard
