5. Under the Skin – Jonathan
Glazer
For making it all irresistible by mixing deft cinematic technique
with a suave direction of actors.
4. Gone Girl – David
Fincher
For signifying a total command of his cinematic powers and for
expressing it with virtuosity.
3. The Immigrant – James Gray
For the remarkably consistent vigor with which he has presented
the essence of America, and for never being slight about it. He supersedes the
very notion of the form.
2. How to Train Your Dragon 2 – Dean DeBlois
For never confusing style with meaningless flourishes; his
purposeful grasp of story, tone and vision makes his presence in cinema
invaluable.
1. Listen Up Philip – Alex Ross Perry
For rhythms like no else. Some have accused him of merely
insidiously borrowing from influences. With this and The Color Wheel, I have no doubt that the current chapter in the
story of the cinema is his to tell.

Up: Starred Up – David Mackenzie
