5. Room – Brie Larson
For,
as always, carrying so much on her shoulders. Her talent is unequivocal and her
vigor unmatched.
4. Carol – Rooney Mara
For
an utterly unwavering characterization. Therese is completely lucid and no actress
this year absorbed more from her script.
3. Sicario – Emily Blunt
For an entrancingly calculated performance that is way more than
merely reactive. And boy, does she nail that final scene or what!
2. Carol – Cate Blanchett
For the best performance she's ever given. I have infamously
been somewhat of a Blanchett agnostic in the past, but now, I'll always have
Carol.
1. The Diary of a Teenage Girl – Bel Powley
For the year's greatest performance by anyone. Her intelligence,
her postpubescence, her sheer guts. It absolutely floored me.
Runner
Up: American Ultra – Kristen Stewart
I
Can’t Advance Without Mentioning:
Clouds of Sils Maria – Juliette Binoche
45 Years – Charlotte Rampling
Heaven Knows What – Arielle Holmes
Phoenix – Nina Hoss
Sleeping with Other People – Alison Brie
