5. Creed – Ryan Coogler
For
trusting his audience so fervidly with his cadence. In acknowledging his
clichés, he dodges them.
4. It Follows – David Robert Mitchell
For
a tremendous trundle of rhythmic aptitude and allegorical savoir-faire. No one
else this year gained my trust quicker.
3. Carol – Todd Haynes
For his brilliant intellectual eye, his fierce guiding hand and
his amaranthine heart.
2. Mad Max: Fury Road – George Miller
For acquiring the fastidious temperament that was compulsory for
his animated films and beautifully infusing it in a glorious assemblage of
pace, pitch and practice. Masterful!
1. Inside Out – Pete Docter
For working harder than any one person on any single film this
year. And yet, his creation feels as if it were fully-formed from his head
immediately. He does what only the bravest directors can do: he never calls
attention to himself but rather lets his characters tell his story. Quick
Shoutout: Co-Director Ronnie Del Carmen, one of the greatest story men in
animation.
Runner
Up: Anomalisa – Charlie Kaufman, Duke Johnson
