by
Julien Faddoul

5. Transit –
Christian Petzold
For interesting work. The narrative's central relationship would appear as banal as it actually is were it not for his alluring and thought-provoking conceit.

4. I Lost My Body – Jérémy Clapin, Guillaume Laurant
For a pensive, imaginative animated film that tells its story in a non-linear, bifurcated manner.

3. The Irishman – Steven Zaillian
For a creating a moral structure that completely pierces the heart.

2. Little Women –
Greta Gerwig
For disseminating an onslaught of soothing memories without resorting to nostalgia.

1. Deadwood – David Milch
For his vigor. The sad paradox is that while the televisionization of modern Hollywood cinema has, for the most part, rendered thematic potency imperceptible, it requires a cinematic denouement of an actual TV Drama to deliver the artful wisdom of the basic human blessings and flaws (fear, romance, vengeance, guardianship etc.) that can publicly befall the consciousness of man.

Runner Up: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World – Dean DeBlois
