The 2019 Cinema Touch Awards - PICTURE

by
Julien Faddoul

5. High Flying Bird
For an exceptional, well-acted, highly intelligent rapid-fire dramedy on the politics – both racial and systemic – of the basketball world. The final few minutes of the film, which adjusts the audience's perception of what has gone before, is some of the most affecting work of Soderbergh’s career.

4. The Irishman (I Heard You Paint Houses)
For a long, muted, deliberate crime film. It is a film about the rumination in between crimes, with searing set-pieces of uncharacteristic laconism, and immaculate performances from the three leading maestros.

3. Little Women
For a marvellous, feminist, baroque adaptation that is presented and edited thematically, rather than narratively, jumping back and forth through time, with an ingenious, Nabokovian-style ending. It is the best cinematic adaptation of this material to date.

2. Parasite
For the year's most thrilling ride. An exemplary, unpredictable, witty satire on class struggles, social mobility and “solidarity forever”, with riveting Hitchcockian staging and excellent performances.

1. Deadwood
For a bouquet, an appraisal and a partner in crime. Those who have been waiting 13 years for Milch’s prematurely cancelled masterwork on the symbolic establishing of American civilization from human chaos, to finally be encapsulated and adjourned, will be confronted with the realization that, at age 74, not only does he meet the mastery of said work, but he eclipses it.

6. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
