The 2019 Cinema Touch Awards - ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

by
Julien Faddoul

5. Her Smell –
Alex Ross Perry
For a kinetically unpleasant film to sit through, presented as five separate sequences depicting its main character’s demise and ultimate redemption. Formidable and often astounding, for those who can take it.

4. Marriage Story – Noah Baumbach
For a deft and often moving Baumbachian portrait of the unanticipated bitterness of divorce proceedings.

3. Knives Out – Rian Johnson
For a highly amusing Agatha-Christie-style whodunnit served within a nest made up of modern political issues. In the end, it manages to say something arresting and cathartic about the American Dream.

2. High Flying Bird –
Tarell Alvin McCraney
For an incisive and insightful piece of razzmatazz. Real life is nothing but a rehearsal for something else to these characters, and spending time with them is never less than enjoyably bitchy.

1. Parasite – Bong Joon Ho, Jin Won Han
For making the most telling points of any film this year. Although it may be a tad heavy-handed, it's commentary on the current zeitgeist was both the most original and fun of the film year.

Runner Up: Ash is Purest White – Jia Zhangke
